Our Story

Gaazna – The Turmeric of Uttarakhand is a research-based product. The research story of this product is focused on the observation that almost all villages of Uttarakhand grow turmeric (Haldi) in their households /fields but even today, every household buys turmeric packets from the market. We analysed over 250 samples from Uttarakhand and found 7 to 11 percent curcumin content turmeric (Sample analysis – 9 replicated each at CSIR-IHBT Palampur, Govt. of India Lab) . The collected cultivars from Uttarakhand were compared with control varieties received from the Indian Institute of Spice Research (lISR – ICAR, Govt. of India)Kozhikode. Cultivars were grown at a field station located in the village Dhauntri (in Gaazna Patti). Commercial farming is progressing with the help of farmers’ participation, especially women.
Gaazna – The Turmeric of Uttarakhand is grown under organic conditions in the field stations located at village Dhauntri, Block Dunda, District Uttarkashi by the startup entity. This area is traditionally known as “Gaazna Patti” and hence the name of the product. The processing (cleaning, washing, cutting drying) is all done manually because this turmeric is prepared from the mother rhizome which has several roots attached and is difficult to process in machines.
After drying, the turmeric is ground and packed under hygienic conditions.
